Sculpture for 2012 arena

Three nine-metre tall letters forming the word 'run' are to be built outside the Olympic Park handball arena in Hackney.

Made of glass and stainless steel, the sculpture will have a mirror effect in the day, turning more transparent at night, when it will be lit up with internal LED lights.

The £2.1million piece is funded by the Greater London Authority, the London Development Agency, and the Olympic Delivery Authority.

Created by artist Monica Bonvicini, it is set to be unveiled as a permanent feature on the plaza outside the handball arena this autumn.

Residents will also get a chance to see inside the new arena, which is due for completion in June, at a series of test events. The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games has said it will offer Hackney folk a limited number of free tickets to watch athletes try out the new venue in November. Free tickets will also be available for goal ball in December. Residents will also be the first to get the chance to buy tickets for basketball and BMX test events before they go on general sale. Details will be announced later this year.
