Safe Urban driving (CPC) course for HGV drivers in Hackney
"Safe Urban Driving" is a one day training course that covers a range of aspects of driving an HGV in the urban environment, with a particular focus on driving around vulnerable road users such as cyclists and pedestrians.
The course is both practical and classroom based and encourages HGV drivers to empathise with cyclists by giving them the experience of riding a bike on the road.
The course is accredited and meets the requirements of driver CPC obligations under EU directive 2003/59 which requires HGV drivers to complete 35 hours of professional development over a 5 year period. The directive came into effect in September 2008 for bus and coach drivers, and September 2009 for lorry and van drivers (over 3.5 tonnes).
Theory module:
- The changing streetscape and the urban environment
- Vulnerable road users: pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists
- Sharing the road safely
- Defensive driving techniques and actions in the event of an emergency incident
Practical module:
- Driver attitude and perception
