New Age Games winners

Residents taking part in the New Age GamesWinners of the New Age Games finals received a bonus prize - free tickets to the Olympic or Paralympic games.

More than 150 residents, aged 50 and over, attended the event at Clissold Leisure Centre on 2 December. Awards were given to those who had shown the greatest level of improvement, commitment and community spirit during the New Age Games, which is a year round programme offering free sports and activities for over 50s.

Nicole Foncha, from Stoke Newington, who attends seven fitness sessions a week including gym, Zumba and swimming, was one of the 21 winners.

She said: "I'm disabled and it has improved my whole life. I'm stronger because I've been using my upper body. I can swim now, as the water takes the weight, and I sleep better. It's a godsend. I hope it never stops."

Visitors on the day were also able to try out new sports. In addition a 65-strong conga line was let loose around the sports hall.

Cllr Jonathan McShane, Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care and Culture, said: "You're a massive inspiration. It's days like this that make my job worthwhile."

Hackney's own Paralympian, swimmer and 2012 hopeful Dervis Konuralp, added: "It's great to see that you're enjoying yourselves and achieving. Regardless of how old you are or what ability you have, sport is accessible to you."

Booking for the new programme begins early next year, with activities taking place all over the borough.
