About Hackney the place
Hackney is at the heart of London, located on the City Fringe, and boasts more green space than any other inner London borough.
Rich in diversity
Hackney is rich in diversity, with more than 100 languages spoken here and a strong mix of cultures. Hackney is also a young borough, with more than a quarter of the 210,000 residents aged under 19.
This eclectic mix leads to a food offer that means you can virtually eat your way around the world with high quality, affordable cuisines including Vietnamese, Greek, Turkish, Chinese and Kosher.
Vibrant, cultural and artistic
Hackney is one of the Capital's most vibrant cultural and artistic places, with celebrated art galleries, museums, theatres and cinemas.
Transport
Getting around Hackney is improving all the time, and the Council actively encourages those who live, work or visit here to walk, cycle and take public transport in favour of driving. Hackney has been named the best cycling borough in London.
Four new London Overground stations: Shoreditch High Street, Hoxton, Haggerston and Dalston Junction on the extended East London line were opened on 27 April 2010, bringing better connections and faster, more comfortable travel to the borough.
A new £50 million rail line from Dalston Junction to Canonbury and Highbury and Islington was opened on 28 February 2011. Eight trains an hour are set to run along the new section of track. From Dalston Junction, they connect to three other new London Overground stations: Haggerston, Hoxton and Shoreditch High Street. The line then runs as far south as New Cross, Crystal Palace and West Croydon, currently carrying over 70,000 passengers a day. A final phase of work will extend the line further from Clapham Junction to Dalston Junction via Surrey Quays. This link will complete a planned 'orbital railway' for London, and is due to open in 2012.
A host borough for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games
