Annual Report: A Cleaner, Greener Borough
Annual Report 2008

A Cleaner, Greener Hackney

Keeping the borough clean and attractive and working to make Hackney carbon neutral is important for improving our neighbourhoods and enhancing pride in our borough.

We are now recycling nearly a quarter of our waste – in 2002 the figure was less than 1%. To help to cut our carbon footprint, our fleet of low-emission waste collection vehicles is one of the greenest in Europe.

Getting involved

We are encouraging residents to get more involved with decision making. For example, last year we recruited 3,000 local residents to join our new citizens’ e-panel. As part of Local Democracy Week 2007, young people took part in a Scrutiny review that made recommendations about how to involve young people in local democracy.

The 2012 Games are inspiring people to get involved in volunteering now and for when the Games come in four years. More than 40 local people graduated from the London 2012 official volunteering programme, Personal Best.

New investment 07/08:

  • Recycling service: we introduced plastic recycling, expanded organic waste recycling and our green box services, introduced compulsory recycling to street level properties and began a three year programme to replace our street cleaning fleet.
  • Town centres: we installed new street furniture and street lighting and continued the refurbishment of roads and pavements.

08/09

  • Keeping Hackney clean: graffiti and fly posting teams will double and the waste and street cleansing fleets will be enhanced.
  • Town centres: there will be environmental improvements around stations and refurbishment of roads and walkways.
