Better Education and Schools

Education in Hackney is being transformed. The £167 million Building Schools for the Future programme is underway. This involves enhancing all our secondary and special schools, rebuilding six schools and renovating three more.

Alongside this we are building new mixed, non-denominational, non-selective secondary schools. Mossbourne, Petchey, and Bridge Academies are now open. The City of London KPMG Academy is due in 2009 and the fifth – Skinners Academy – in 2010, increasing the number of secondary school places to 2,040.

The proportion of students achieving English and Maths GCSEs at grades A*-C continues to close in on the national average: since 2004 the gap has reduced from 8% to just 4% behind.

London 2012 is inspiring young people to take up sport and achieve at the highest levels. To support the borough’s talented young sportspeople we have launched the Hackney Youth Sports Fund. The first grants were awarded in March. The £300k fund will support young sporting talent.

New investment 07/08:

  • New facilities: Woodberry Down Children’s Centre opened in April 2008. Eight more centres will open over the next few years bringing the total number in Hackney to 22.

08/09

  • Better schools: delivery of the Building Schools for the Future programme to refurbish or rebuild schools continues.
  • Over £11 million of grants and schemes will be allocated through the Learning Trust.
  • Accessible youth services: we will be increasing youth provision on our estates by providing two more youth work sessions per week in five additional estates, making 15 estates in total.
