Annual Report 2008
Safer Communities
Making our communities safer is important for our development as a place where people want to live, work and visit.
Our crime rate is falling faster than any other local authority in the country. Hackney Council and the Police have together reduced incidents of violent crime by 6.7% over the last 12 months. Incidents of knife and gun-related crime have dropped by 34% and 31% respectively over the last two years.
The Hoxton Police Safer Neighbourhood Team is now co-located with the Council’s area-based enforcement officers in Orsman Road in Shoreditch – the first example of its kind in the country.
“Hackney Police has an excellent partnership with the Council. Joint initiatives such as the Mobile Intervention Team, which tackles violent youth crime, and the new shared office at Orsman Road are making a real contribution to crime figures. Last year there were 8,000 fewer victims of crime than there were four years ago, making a real difference to the quality of residents' lives.”
Chief Superintendent Steve Dann, Borough Commander
New investment 07/08:
- CCTV: expansion of CCTV at locations across the borough, such as Stoke Newington, Woodberry Down, Hackney and Dalston town centres and railway stations has helped reduce crime – in 2007 almost 2,700 arrests were made using CCTV.
08/09:
- Enforcement: we are doubling the number of teams tackling graffiti and fly-posting, providing a joined-up, visible and uniformed presence on our streets and estates, tackling anti-social behaviour.
