Beacon Status
What is Beacon status?
The Beacon awards recognise local government’s excellence and innovation in improving quality of life for their residents and communities.
The most recent beacon councils were announced on 3 March 2009 and Hackney was among them.
Why is Hackney a Beacon?
Hackney Council was awarded Beacon status for outstanding work in using the opportunity of hosting the 2012 Games to encourage communities to be more active.
It also received Beacon status for strategic commissioning, generating more effective ways of supporting local people, working with partners to invest public resources effectively.
The Council’s Beacon application was based on its Olympic and Paralympic work around four key areas: increasing physical activity; boosting jobs, training and volunteering; encouraging involvement in cultural programmes and developing community environment projects.

What we’re doing
Hackney will now share its experience with local councils throughout the country over the coming year.
Joint regional events will be organised between Hackney and the other Beacons in our theme area, which are: Kent, Essex, Dorset and Greenwich. Also Hackney will organise three themed open days, independent of the other Beacon authorities.
Hackney Open Days
There will be three open days for other councils to visit Hackney covering the areas of culture, jobs and training opportunities and sports. Each day will consist of a visit to the Olympic Park, meeting the 2012 team, lunch with at least one cabinet member and involvement in an activity, depending on the particular theme.
