Beacon Status

What is Beacon status?

The Beacon awards recognise local government's excellence and innovation in improving quality of life for their residents and communities.

The most recent beacon councils were announced on 3 March 2009 and Hackney was among them.

Why is Hackney a Beacon?

Hackney Council was awarded Beacon status for outstanding work in using the opportunity of hosting the 2012 Games to encourage communities to be more active.

It also received Beacon status for strategic commissioning, generating more effective ways of supporting local people, working with partners to invest public resources effectively.

The Council's Beacon application was based on its Olympic and Paralympic work around four key areas: increasing physical activity; boosting jobs, training and volunteering; encouraging involvement in cultural programmes and developing community environment projects.
