Deaths in care or nursing homes

When a person dies in care organised by Hackney Council

Hackney Council can assume responsibility for a funeral if a person dies in care, provided that:

  • the deceased was in a care or nursing home managed on behalf of Hackney (or was placed in care outside the borough by the council’s Adult Social CareDepartment)
  • no other arrangements have been / can be made.

Privately-organised care

If the deceased died in a privately-owned care or nursing home, Hackney Council can assume responsibility for a funeral, but it must be established that

  • there are no relatives to undertake the funeral
  • no alternative arrangements have been, or can be, made.

The manager of the care home will normally register the death if the funeral is to be undertaken by Hackney Council.
