When relatives are unable to arrange a funeral
If relatives of a deceased resident are not able or prepared to undertake responsibility for the funeral arrangements, the council has a duty to dispose of that person and to recover their costs in making the arrangements.
The nearest family member of the deceased – or the person requesting that the council arranges the funeral – will be required to sign an application for a local authority funeral, acknowledging and agreeing that the council will collect any funds that become available to offset the cost of the funeral.
Any near relatives may therefore be required to fund any shortfall in order that the council's liabilities are met.
