Biodiversity Advice
Hackney Council is committed to improving our borough for wildlife. To help conserve and enhance biodiversity in Hackney, a number of advice notes have been produced to provide information about managing green spaces for wildlife and following best practice in planning, development and project management.

Hackney Biodiversity Partnership have produced advice notes on how to create and manage areas for wildlife. See Biodiversity Management in Hackney (PDF, 459KB) for information on meadow creation, hedgerows, planting schemes, bird boxes and much more.
The following document provides specifications for bird and bat box sitings (Word, 32KB), including information on attaching boxes to trees and choosing suitable locations.
Advice for planners and developments
Information regarding the planning system in Hackney is available on the Planning and Planning Policies pages.
The following documents have been produced to provide additional advice to planners and developers -
Hackney Advice Note: Biodiversity and the Built Environment (PDF, 1.4MB) provides information about biodiversity measures that can be incorporated into new developments or regeneration projects. It offers general principles on the features that Hackney Council expect to see in development applications.
Hackney Advice Note: Biodiversity Validation and Biodiversity Assessments (PDF, 83KB) provides detailed guidance on our requirements for biodiversity surveys and assessments needed for the validation of planning applications.
Information about planning validation checklists is available at Documents, Forms and Guides
Advice for Hackney project managers
To ensure that Hackney Council projects follow best practice guidelines we have produced a Hackney Projects Biodiversity Checklist (PDF, 99KB) for our own project managers. This includes information about what sorts of projects will need species or habitat surveys and directs project managers to sources of further advice.
