Blue Badge misuse
Using your Blue Badge properly
Misuse of a Blue Badge is when someone other than the holder parks using the badge and the holder is not present.
We know that you, your family, carers and friends are particularly concerned about this.
Some types of misuse are not intentional and happen because drivers are not aware of the rules of the schemes. At other times, misuse may be calculated and deliberate in order to avoid congestion charging or other parking costs.
It is important that as a Blue Badge holder, or as someone responsible for a Blue or Companion Badge holder, you know how to use your badge properly.
For information on how to use your Blue Badge, please see The Blue Badge scheme: Rights and Responsibilities in England booklet you received with your badge.
Preventing fraud
Abuse of Blue Badges is an issue not just in Hackney but across the country.
A minority of people continually misuse badges, and in doing so are denying genuine badge holders somewhere to park.
To address this, we have introduced a dedicated Fraud Team. They patrol the streets of Hackney, monitoring misuse of Blue Badges and companion badges and prosecuting offenders.
Misusing a Blue Badge is a criminal offence that can carry a fine of up to £1,000. Please make sure you know how to use your Blue Badge properly..
How do I report misuse of a Blue Badge?
If you think someone might be using a stolen badge or abusing the scheme, please contact the Blue Badge Fraud Team on 020 8356 8866. This is a confidential line and you do not have to leave your name or address. You can also email bluebadgefraud@hackney.gov.uk.
What should I do if my Blue Badge is stolen?
If your Blue Badge is stolen, you should report the theft to the police immediately. Once this is done, please contact Social Services on 020 8356 6262 or at 205 Morning Lane, Hackney E9 6JX. You should quote the crime reference number or crime report when you apply for a replacement.
