Compostable liners for the Blue Bins

Hackney Council’s recycling team has introduced compostable liners that residents can use when recycling their food waste. It is not compulsory to use the liners; it is simply an option for residents who want to remove some of the ‘ick’ factor that comes with recycling food waste. Residents can use small liners in the kitchen caddy, or big ones in the larger Blue Bin.

Important: Only one type of compostable liner has been approved by London Waste Ltd for use - Wenterra Bio Bags.  The collection crew will not collect Blue Bins lined with any other type of liner, and absolutely no plastic bags.

How do I use the compostable liners?

Put a liner in your kitchen caddy and start filling it with food waste that can be composted (no raw meat or bones). When it is full, tie the top together and put the bag of food waste in your large outdoor Blue Bin, ready for collection. Alternatively, you can buy the large liners only, for the outdoor bin, and then you won’t need to use the small ones in the kitchen caddy, just rinse it out after emptying it into the large, lined Blue Bin. You could also use liners in each of the bins. Remember - only the approved liners can be used. If you use any other type, your food waste will not be collected.

I don’t want to participate in this service, what do I do?

If you don’t want to recycle your food waste, please phone the recycling hotline to confirm you do not wish to participate in the scheme, and would like the bins collected from your property.
