24. OTHER ARCHIVAL DOCUMENTS AND MANUSCRIPTS

There are two sequences not covered in detail in this Guide. The first is the 'M' lists, which are mainly collections of deeds and other property records from the British Record Association and other sources. The series also includes manuscript histories and small collections of documents generally. The most significant of these have been identified in other sections of the Guide. Prior to 1984 all deeds were indexed to the document for personal names and places after that date the descriptions of small collections were altered to give more relevant detail, and indexing done to the list only.

The second sequence, the 'V' lists, cover unprovenanced plan and map series, or series of maps and plans which have no other documents with them. the more significant items are described in the map index which is arranged by place (Middlesex, London, Hackney, Shoreditch, Stoke Newington and London Borough of Hackney) and within those divisions by date. Plans of single premises or small groups of properties are indexed in the archives topographical index. (For details see Section 27)

J F R Tyssen

Transcripts and library D/F/TYS

The Tyssen library formed the basis of the Hackney Metropolitan Borough local history collection, having its origins in the collections of the Tyssen family, lords of the manor of Hackney Kingshold and Lordshold manors. The collection was separately maintained, initially at the Manor House, Church Street, Hackney, later in the second Hackney Town Hall under the Tyssen Librarian and from 1908-09 at the newly opened Central Library in Mare Street. It was considerably added to by later librarians. What is listed here is a combination of transcripts, some documents which may have formed part of the Tyssen family archives and plans. The printed book collection is in the course of integration into the local history library as part of the Hackney collection; a large collection of religious writings from the 17th century onwards was catalogued in 1994-6, work largely funded by a grant from the British Library. The visual items have already been integrated into the main visual collection. The Tyssens would appear to have been active in commissioning artists to record vanished buildings, but there is no documentary evidence for this. Transcripts from vestry minutes for Hackney 1581-1771; and churchwardens, Poor Trustees etc accounts 1805-39; copied Hackney election material 1840-70; copy records on St John at Hackney, including construction of new church 1788-90 and parish registers 1555-1832 (extracts only), documents transcribed from 1241-1832, also orders creating new Hackney parishes etc 19th C; copy papers for South Hackney church, including plan of Tryon's Place 1789-1826; charity material 1671-1879; copy marriage licenses 1779-1826; copy wills and abstracts for Hackney people 1374-1852; copy deeds, list of tenants and transcripts of court roll for manors of Kingshold, Lordshold and Grumbolds 1327-1857 (incomplete); pedigrees of Hackney families 1658-1858; copy of monumental inscriptions for St John at Hackney, South Hackney, St Thomas Square Chapel and New Gravel Pit Chapel 1787-1850; other research papers including details of an ancient boat found in Hackney Marsh c1830; mss copy of John Thomas 'History of Hackney Parish' by C H Bestow, 19th C; extant of Hackney estate of Knights Templars, terriers and other records 1291-c1654; copy papers concerning Balmes estate 1485-1624; armorial bearing for Hackney families; copy documents on the Urswick family 19th C; plays performed at Newcome's School (Hackney School) c170-1829 and notes on pupils; Hackney Literary & Scientific Institution Literary Magazine 1857; reports, programmes etc 1848-60; also reports and programmes of the Hackney Mutual Improvement Society, the West Hackney Literary & Hackney Literary & Scientific and the
