27. SPECIAL INDEXES

A general description of the collection is given in the general introduction of the guide. Each of the collections has a main finding aid as follows:

Official and Deposited Records

Lists and the following indexes: Subject, topographical (street and area with some names, origins and cross references from terrace names); field name index; rate book index (selected rate books, streets only). Map index (all maps, including printed ones, divided by area and then by date); personal names index

Census

Street name index compiled by the PRO for 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891 Personal names and part transcript to Hackney 1811 and 1821 census; names index to Hackney 1831 census in progress. Names index for 1851 census for Shoreditch. All published by the East of London Family History Society. Surname index for Shoreditch Haggerston West sub district for 1871 published by Clive Ayton.

Local History Collections

Besides the author/class catalogues to the main and Stoke Newington collections there are subject/names indexes to the Hackney Gazette 1965-1982, to the Shoreditch and Stoke Newington cuttings books (see Section 4); a directory catalogue (by date and then description) and an index to the Echoes local history articles

Visual Collections

Main card catalogue arranged topographically and by subject (divisions by special type of building, biography etc). also index of artist. In the process of being superseded by Hackney on Disk. See (7) above for details.

Oral History Collection

Card catalogue of cassette copies, alphabetical by name of subject. Card catalogue of complete collection, by tape number

Other Indexes
