Nubian Spirit: The African Legacy of the Nile Valley

Thursday 9 July, 6 -7.30pm
"Nubian Spirit" is a beautifully shot documentary which unravels the fascinating and often magical legacy of Ancient Sudan. It shines light onto the ancient African culture, history and spiritual mythology of the people from the Nile Valley. Shot in Sudan and the UK the documentary features dynamic interviews with leading scholars, archaeologists and ground breaking museum curators. Directed by Louis Buckley and produced by BlackNine Films. Running time 74 minutes. St John at Hackney Churchyard Gardens

Thursday 6 August, 6-7.30pm
Need others to play group games? Then why not come along to this adult games night. This will be your chance to learn how to play new and interesting games.

88 Crowley Road: Rehearsed Reading

Friday 7 August, 1-3pm
Written by Judd Batchelor. Two married Caribbean couples live at 88 Crowley Road, but at different times. One in the 1950s, the Windrush era and the other in 2009. A magical potion brings them together. The heart of the play looks at the experiences and the lessons we all could learn from our past and our present. The writer welcomes the communitys’ input and comments about the piece to help develop the play, followed by an informal question and answer session. Please phone the museum to book your place.

Games Exchange Young Ambassadors

Tuesday 11 August, 2-4pm
Join this unique event and learn how to play local, regional, national and international games with the young people from Hackney Games Club. This workshop is facilitated by Universal Board Games and Hackney Games Club members.

Games Community Exchange

Friday 21 August, 2-4pm
Let’s learn from each other. This is your chance to teach people how to play your favourite game and to learn from others.

Big Blue Fence Installation Workshops

Tuesday 25 August, 1-4pm
Wednesday 26 August 09 12-4pm
Be a part of capturing the changing stories of E9 by using pictures and memorabilia.  These will then be displayed in the Big Blue Fence Installation - a scale model based on a section of the Olympic-site perimeter fence. Facilitated by Immediate Theatre.

Games Community Exchange

Tuesday 1 September, 2-4pm
Let’s learn from each other this is your second chance to teach people how to play your favourite game and to learn from others.

Gamers End of Exhibition Celebration

Thursday 17 September, 6-7.30pm
Come and play games and win the games you play at our end of exhibition Gamers event. This is your opportunity to put into practice what games you have learnt through the exhibition duration. With Universal Board Games.

Family events

Family events are drop-in and suitable, for all ages. Children under 8 years old must be accompanied by an adult.

Guided history walk

Saturdays 13 June and 11 July
Starting at the Town Hall the route explores Hackney’s Medieval, Tudor, Georgian and Victorian past – with its important buildings, famous names and local landmarks. Suitable for all ages. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Where: Meet on the steps of the Town Hall, Mare Street, E8 at 11am
Duration: Approx 2 hours
Cost: Free, but booking essential

Check Mate

Wednesday 22 July, 2-4pm
Want to learn how to play chess? Or just brush up on your game.  This master class will give you the opportunity to put your new skills into practice. This workshop is facilitated by Malena Griffith.

Glad Rags and Tea Bags

Thursday 23 July, 2-4pm
Put on your best dancing shoes for a toe tapping family activity inspired by the tea dances enjoyed by Hackney’s older residents. Tea will be served. This event will be facilitated by the Variety Collective.

Tall Tales from Africa

Thursday 30 July, 2-3pm and repeated 3-4pm
African drumming and storytelling for all the family, a LOUD session. Each session consist of storytelling, followed by drumming. This workshop is facilitated by Nzinga Dance Ensemble.

Game for a laugh

Thursday 6 August, 2-4pm
Join in the fun of the Games Exchange exhibition by making you very own Snakes and Ladders board game.

Games Exchange at St John at Hackney Churchyard Gardens

Saturday 8 August, 12-4pm
Come and play your favourite board games, teach others and learn new ones at this family day at the front of St John at Hackney Church.  Or try out and top your "personal best" at lawn games and swingball with the 2012 Team.  Don't forget to bring a picnic! The place; St John at Hackney Churchyard Gardens, Lower Clapton Road E5.

Oware Game

Wednesday 12 August, 2-4pm
Learn how to play the West African Game Oware, improve your skills and knowledge about the game. This workshop is facilitated by Lydia Batchelor-Anokye.

Soap Cakes

Thursday 13 August, 2-4pm
Step back in time to create your own soaps and decorate them with flowers or insects from a Victorian garden.

Games International III

Wednesday 19 August, 2-4pm
Your last change to learn how to play games from all over the world in our summer family programme with Universal Board Games.

Food Planet

Thursday 20 August, 2-4pm
You are what you eat! Decorate a paper globe with foods from around the world and take away information on where some of our favourite dishes originally came from.

Museum teas and tours

Enjoy a free cup of tea and a tour of Hackney Museum on Wednesday afternoons from 3pm. Book in advance.
