Sports Grants

A number of grants and awards are available from the council to athletes, clubs and coaches within Hackney to help them achieve their potential. Below you'll find information about the various grants available, application forms and guidance notes to help you submit an application.

Additionally, you may also wish to read about the London Mayor's Sports Legacy Fund, which subsidises the cost of sports training (to increase the number of Londoners working and volunteering in sports and physical activity in the run up to the 2012 games).

About the grants / awards available from Hackney Council

  • Awards are granted to talented young athletes to develop and progress with in their chosen sport.
  • The Youth Sport Fund also provides funding for Community Clubs who provide opportunities to young people.
  • A newly introduced Coach Education Fund is available for coaches who hold at least a level 1 national governing body qualification and want to gain a higher level of qualification which will be used to deliver to young people of Hackney.
  • The grants are provided through the Youth Sports Fund, which is managed by The Leisure and Physical Team.

Please note you are only allowed to submit one application form per year. There are four opportunities to apply for funding: the second round closes 29 July 2011, further closing dates for future rounds can be found with in the guideline notes.

Guidance notes

Cash 4 Clubs (UK)

Sports club that are registered with their sport's National Governing Body or local authority can apply for grants of up to £1,000 through the Cash 4 Clubs grants scheme. Cash 4 Clubs is a sports funding scheme which gives clubs a unique chance to apply for grants to improve facilities, purchase new equipment, gain coaching qualifications, and generally invest in the sustainability of their club.  Since 2008 over £100,000 has been given out in grants to 139 community sports clubs across the UK. There are three tiers of grants at £250, £500 and £1,000. 

Previous grants have been awarded to the Southampton Canoe club, which received a grant of £1,000 towards purchasing junior paddles and safety equipment; the Rugby Sea Cadets, which received a grant of £1,000 to maintain and replace safety equipment; and Ipswich Basketball which received a grant of £1,000 to initiate a new women's team aimed at the 16+ league. Any sports club can apply as long as they are registered with their sports National Governing Body or local authority.
