CCTV - What and Why
Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras are installed in many public places throughout Hackney. They are there to protect the people who live, work or visit the borough by contributing to crime reduction and stopping anti social behaviour, as well as providing evidence to assist in the prosecution of offenders, aiding the emergency services, and encouraging greater use of the town centre.
Signs are displayed stating that CCTV cameras are in operation, and the cameras are carefully positioned to respect the privacy of the public – they will not overlook any areas where privacy is expected. The information gathered is kept secure against uses it is not intended for.
There are over 100 CCTV cameras in the borough. The images from the cameras are continuously monitored by fully trained and Police vetted staff. The Control room is operational 24 hours a day, all year and is only accessible by authorised staff, who are all fully trained and Police-vetted.
Hackney's CCTV Service works in partnership with the Metropolitan Police Service, Mare Street Business Watch, Shoreditch Night Owl Watch, Amhurst Park Action Group, Homerton University Hospital and Dalston Radios Against Crime (DRAC). This enables us to share up to the minute information. The local Police control room can also receive images from the cameras, to enable them to respond to incidents and prioritise their resources.
