Making a Better, Greener Hackney
The new customer services centre is designed with the environment in mind. The building incorporates the latest in sustainable design.
The atrium will be the lungs as well as the heart of the building forming a natural ventilation system. The glass roof and walls will let in as much natural light as possible with energy efficient interior lighting. Solar panels will also harness the sun’s rays to top up the electricity supply. Hot water and heating will come from a wood-burning, carbon-neutral boiler. All materials have been chosen to be non-polluting, recycled or made from renewable sources wherever possible.
All these features and more will help the Council cut our carbon emissions by at least 12 per cent and use at least 10 per cent renewable energy in the new building. We’re aiming for an excellent BREEAM rating, the top construction industry standard for sustainability.
And just bringing services together on one place will help our carbon footprint by cutting travelling between different offices. Council staff will also be encouraged to take up more sustainable travel to, from and around the borough, especially cycling.
