Car clubs (car sharing) in Hackney
Currently only Zipcar operate from car club bays in the borough, but we are moving towards a multi-operator arrangement. Hackney supports car sharing and car clubs giving residents a safer, cleaner and greener way of accessing cars when they need them, without the hassle and cost of owning one. Our aim is to ensure that there is a car club bay within three minutes' walk of every household.
Car club cars are parked on-street in their own designated bay and are spread evenly throughout the borough, making them easily accessible.
Following public consultation in September 2012, we will be introducing 49 new car club bays. We aim to introduce 28 bays in the first six months and a further 21 by March 2014. Read more on the consultation and planned rollout (Word, 221KB).
What does it cost?
Membership costs as little as £50 a year (based on a two year membership). Cars start at £5.25 per hour, including 20 miles worth of petrol free. There are also rates to use the cars for 24 hours or over night.
After joining, you just pay for what you want to use. Members book sessions in 30-minute segments (with a minimum period of one hour) over the phone, on the internet or through mobile apps. Members can use Zipcar's vehicles across London and the rest of the UK.

Where are the car club parking bays?
Car club cars are placed in their own on-street parking bays. See the Zipcar bay locator page to find your nearest bay.
The bays have the words 'Car Club Only' on the road and are enforced by parking attendants so that only car club vehicles park in them. Find out about electric vehicle charging bays.
Why do we have a car club?
- to relieve parking pressures within the borough
- to reduce the reliance on private motor vehicles by residents and businesses
- to give people who cannot afford their own car access to a vehicle when they need it.
Owning a car in London expensive, and for many, a car will sit outside unused for the majority of the time. If you drive less than 6-8,000 miles per year then a car club could save you up to £3,500 a year as you don't have to pay for tax, insurance, parking permits, servicing or repairs.
Research shows that people who join a car club will often give up their own car. For every one car club vehicle introduced, 20 private vehicles are taken off the road. This means that designated car club bays can help reduce the demand for parking spaces even in areas of high parking demand. We will continue monitoring parking demand with Zipcar to see whether this happens.
