Child Poverty Review

Child poverty in Hackney is the focus of a new review by the borough’s Children and Young People Scrutiny Commission.

The Commission wants to hear from residents, schools and voluntary sector organisations for their views on what is being done to raise the aspirations of children and young people in the borough.

The purpose of the Child Poverty Review will be to find out what services and support are available to raise the aspirations of parents, carers, and schools for a child’s development, to assess what impact this has had, and make recommendations to the Council and partner organisations on raising aspirations to alleviate child poverty.

Cllr Feryat Demirci, Chair of the Children and Young People Scrutiny Commission, said: “Child poverty is a major national issue which can prevent young people from achieving their potential. This is why it is vital that we find out what is being done in Hackney to raise the aspirations of everyone involved with the development of children and young people."

Starting in September, the Commission will gather evidence from a range of sources over a number of months, including from The Learning Trust and the Council’s Children and Young People Services directorate, before making recommendations to Cabinet.

Scrutiny Commissions are made up of Councillors from all political parties who investigate issues of local concern. Reviews are evidence-based and non-political.

The Children and Young People Scrutiny Commission considers issues relating to Children Services, Children and Young People’s Social Care, Education and the Learning Trust.
