Citizenship Ceremonies
Becoming a British citizen is a significant event in your life. As a British citizen, you will be joining a community made up of many different backgrounds, cultures and faiths. You will also have the right to live and work anywhere in the European Union.
We hold regular citizenship ceremonies in Hackney Town Hall. These ceremonies are an opportunity for applicants to celebrate their new citizenship and for the Council to celebrate the borough's cultural diversity.
The ceremonies are enjoyable and meaningful, creating a friendly environment for new citizens. It is hoped that the ceremonies will encourage new citizens to play an active part in the community.
What happens at the ceremony?
The ceremony is held as a group although it is possible to arrange for a private ceremony for a fee. During the ceremony, which lasts about one hour, you are required to:
- take either the Oath or Affirmation
- say the pledge of loyalty to the UK
A Hackney dignitary will present you with a commemorative gift box containing your citizenship certificate. You will also receive a pack from the Home Office, including a passport application form.
What do I need to bring to my ceremony?
When you attend a ceremony you need to bring your Home Office invitation letter and a form of photo identification with you (e.g. a passport or driver’s licence). You may wish to bring guests to your ceremony, but please note that spaces are limited.
What is the difference between an Oath and an Affirmation?
If you decide to take an Oath you will be swearing to God. An Affirmation does not have any religious context.
