Clapton Common
Clapton Common stretches from Upper Clapton Road to Stamford Hill. The Common and its surrounds became a designated Conservation Area in 1969. The pond and fountain on the site have been recently rennovated and there are plans to make various other improvements to the park including a new play area.
Clapton Common Play Area Now Open
The brand new play area on Clapton Common is proving to be hugely popular with the local community providing exciting play opportunities for younger and older children. The funding for the play area was raised by the Clapton Common User Group and the design informed by responses obtained from a community engagement event held in 2010. The play area contains a fenced under 5s area and a challenging tree and rope structure for older children. For more information on the play area see the Clapton Common Play Area page.
Little diggers hard at work
October 2010 saw the Clapton Common pond area buzzing with over fifty little diggers putting their green fingers to work. In an effort to enhance the Borough of Hackney and as a voluntary gesture of payback to the community they live in, the boys were part of a project organised by the Sonshine Club of Stamford Hill, in conjunction with Hackney Council. The catchphrase was 'Come on the Common', where they planted three thousand crocus bulbs, spreading over the entire green area on the Common.
This was the second stage of the summer program, beginning with vegetable planting at the bowling green in Springfield Park, and three months of gardening activities, finally taking home the fruits of their labour to be shared with their families. The experience of these little gardeners has sprouted new shoots, with families being encouraged by their little ones to adapt to healthier lifestyles. The Sonshine Club aims to promote healthy living amongst youngsters in the Orthodox Jewish Community by creating a fun and varied programme of gardening and sport activities, with emphasis on environment and eco-friendly initiatives. Firsthand experience of gardening techniques, composting and recycling involve the children in an appreciation of the rich biodiversity of our borough.
Clapton Common User Group
The Clapton Common User Group meets regularly to discuss issues relating to the common and have been working with the Council on designs for a new play area and improvements to the pond and fountain as well as plans for a new café.
