The Anglo-Saxon legend of Beowulf is brought alive by our very own 'Scop' (Saxon storyteller) who will recount the legend and help your class to create their own Saxon stories inspired by a variety of intriguing objects.

Objects of resistance: Enslavement and abolition in the 1800s (Object handling)

Citizenship Unit 5: Living in a diverse world

From the first slave ship to leave British shores in 1562 to the abolition of the slave trade in 1836, discover the role of Britain in the transatlantic slave trade through the stories and belongings of the British and African people who campaigned for its abolition.

 

Victorians

Mare Street: A journey through time (Map work and field trip)

History: Victorian Britain: Local history study

From 1830 to the present day, Hackney has changed from farmland in Middlesex to a thriving metropolis. Examine maps and images and take a trip up St Augustine's Tower to discover how and why this happened.

 

 

 

 

 

Top Hats and Mop Caps: Rich and Poor in Victorian Hackney (Object handling)

History: Victorian Britain

Explore the lives of the Victorian rich and poor living in Hackney and discover how the match girls transformed women's rights.

 

 

WWII

Sidney's suitcase: World War II evacuee (Object handling)

History: Britain since 1930; local history study

Examine the contents inside a real WWII suitcase and discover how old the owner was, where they lived, what they liked doing and why they had to leave Hackney during the war.

 

 

 

 

Britain since 1948

Windrush and beyond (Object handling and role play)

History: Britain since 1930

Discover why people left the Caribbean and what life was like when they arrived by working in small groups to examine items donated by people who left the Caribbean and settled in Hackney in the 1950s and 1960s.

 

 

Citizenship

Travels with my suitcase (Investigative session)

Citizenship: Good relationships and respecting difference

Investigate the world wide roots of Hackney's people through the stories and experiences of five people featured in the museum displays. Experiences covered include seeking asylum, finding work or setting up a business.

 

 

Literacy

Raining cats, dogs and fishing rods (Interactive literacy)

Through word play, poetry and pictures, pupils will have fun with phrases from English, Turkish, Yoruba and many other languages.

They will learn what idioms are and how they can be used to make their creative writing more imaginative.

Outreach

The Kurdish Box (Loan box)

Citizenship Unit 5: Living in a Diverse World

This box will help Kurdish pupils in your class share their knowledge of Kurdish heritage and strengthen their sense of identity within the classroom community. It includes culturally valuable objects, a teacher's resource pack and worksheets.
