User Guide: Quick Search
The Quick Search facility automatically searches for any text you type in which matches:
- part of the name of any organisation listed in the database (e.g. if you type in MIND, you shall get all instances of the letters 'mind' including both City and Hackney MIND and Hackney Childminding Association)
- part of the name of any main subject within the database (e.g. using the same example, typing in MIND will bring up all subjects containing the letters mind - such as Childminding)
- any organisation name AKAs. These are most commonly used for abbreviations or old/other names for an organisation (e.g. typing in HCVS will give you the Hackney Council for Voluntary Services entry).
- any subject name AKA. A new and exciting feature of the database is the Community Information Thesaurus which is currently being developed. Part of this development involves the creation and maintenance of a list of synonyms for commonly used terms in the database. Any matching synonyms or 'Also Known As's will also come up in the search results (e.g. Wheely Bin is an AKA term for Refuse Collection, typing in Wheely Bin will give the same results as if you had typed in Refuse Collection). See Community Information Thesaurus for more details.
General tips:
- Don't use the word 'The' at the beginning of organisations
- Don't use the symbol '&' in your searches - we prefer to use the actual word 'and' instead
- Avoid inverted commas where possible
- If at first you don't succeed, try something slightly different.
