CREATE Art Award
Get involved with unique art projects this summer
Hackney residents have the chance to get involved with two unique art projects this summer as part of the cultural celebrations leading up to the 2012 Games.
Dominoes
Performance company Station House Opera is seeking 1,000 volunteers to build a 10-mile long giant domino rally made from thousands of breeze blocks for its project ‘Dominoes’.
The domino line will topple over on streets, through parks and even on water throughout the five host boroughs on 26 July – exactly three years until the start of the 2012 Olympics.

Rooted in the Earth
Artist Joshua Sofaer is asking local people to get involved with his ‘Rooted in the Earth’ project by nominating their hero for a chance to see that person or group honoured by having their name planted in a giant floral artwork in Clissold Park, N16.
Once a hero has been chosen, a team of local volunteers will join the artist, a landscape gardener and a horticultural expert to plant the winning name, which will be unveiled at the end of June and will be on display until September.
Nominate your hero for Rooted in the Earth before 22 May at: www.rootedintheearth.co.uk

CREATE09 arts festival
The two projects are joint winners of the Create Art Award and will be highlights of the CREATE09 arts festival which will be held from 22 June to 2 August across the five host boroughs for 2012 – Hackney, Greenwich, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest.
Cllr Guy Nicholson, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, said: “Art and culture thrives in the neighbourhoods across the Five Host Boroughs and I’m delighted the CREATE Art Award will give residents and local groups the opportunity to get involved in creating a celebration of the arts for London’s Cultural Olympiad in the run up to 2012, leaving a rich legacy for the arts in our communities.”
