CREATE10 summer festival

The annual summer festival, CREATE, which celebrates arts and culture in the five host boroughs for the 2012 Games, returns this year from 19 June to 1 August.

CREATE10 presents home-grown, internationally-acclaimed artists, including Hackney singer Paloma Faith, artists Gavin Turk and Jason Bruges and award-winning comedy team Punchdrunk.

Events include:

  • underwater music at London Fields Lido
  • a dance event, "Dance Nations Dalston", brought to Gillett Square by the Barbican
  • a "Hackney's Here" art exhibition by local children and artists
  • the Shoreditch Festival
  • a series of discussions about art, politics and ideas, invention, industry and fashion
  • an urban music festival, "Young London: Into Music", where young people are trained and mentored before starring alongside big names in grime, dubstep and indie.

Robin Turner's "Roam" project

A particular highlight of CREATE10 is Hackney artist Robin Turner's "Roam" project, which won this year's Bank of America Merrill Lynch CREATE Art Award.

From 8 to 11 July, Turner will take to the borough's roads in his specially commissioned roving vehicle, stopping at Homerton Hospital and Haggerston Park to explore the changing urban landscape. By day, people will be able to take part in nature activities - from workshops, talks and walks, to picnics and photography. And every evening, the van will be transformed into London's smallest arts space, presenting acoustic gigs, DJ sets, readings and more.

Throughout July, the van will visit all five host boroughs - Hackney, Greenwich, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest.

Robin Turner says: "I want Roam to give a stage to East and South East London's natural gems, from fishing to birdwatching and mud-larking, to wild swimming and nature photography, to poetry. People will be able to come along and just listen to the sounds of the country inside the vehicle."

He adds: "I think CREATE10 is brilliant. There are so many events that everyone can take part in. It acts as a great umbrella, and since it is linked to the five host boroughs for the 2012 Games, it's like having an arts legacy before the Games have even happened."

A platform to showcase London talent

Hackney Council leads on CREATE10 for the five host boroughs. Speaking on behalf of the Host Borough Cultural Partnership Board, Cllr Guy Nicholson, Hackney Council Cabinet Member for Regeneration and the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, says:

"The arts are thriving across our neighbourhoods and CREATE10 provides the perfect platform to show the great world-class creative talent that lives and works in east and south east London. This cultural festival truly belongs to the people of the five host boroughs and I hope it will inspire many more of us to join in and take part in shaping a legacy for the arts from the 2012 Games."
