Teaching cycling in the playground: training for parents and teachers

What is it?

A one day training course to give parents and teachers the skills and confidence to deliver National Standard cycle training in the playground. This will prepare pupils for the Level 2 training in Year 5/6.

Who is it for?

Teachers and parents who have already completed the one to one training to the end of  Level 2.

Cycle training at Daubeney Primary School

Primary school training: road rider course - introduction to using the road

Who is it for?

Up to 14 children from year 5/6 who can already ride a bike independently. Some complete beginner cyclists can be taught to ride whilst the instructors are at the school too.

What is it?

The Road Rider course is the Council's 5 week National Standard course introducing children to cycling on the road. Children will practise their control skills in the playground before going on the road in small groups with a pair of instructors. Pupils will take part in cycling games, learn basic rules of the road, experience riding on quiet roads independently and explore the local area by bike with the group. All participants receive certificates detailing what they learned.

When and where is it?

Training takes place at your school and in the school day, over 5 consecutive weeks. Pupils will need to take part in all 5 weeks of the course.

Secondary school training: making longer journeys

Who is it for?

Year 7/8 pupils at secondary schools who want to learn to ride a bike, get an introduction to the road or increase their existing road riding skills to help them ride to school.

What is it?

Training can be provided in any format, depending on the number and needs of your pupils. Courses can be run as the 5 week National Standard introduction to cycling on road course (as above) or to pairs of pupils. Year 7 pupils could expect to complete the syllabus in 2 on road sessions.

When and where is it?

Training is arranged to suit your school timetable. Training can take place during school curriculum time, PE periods, or as an after school or holiday course.
