Hackney Design Awards 2014 - celebrating great design in Hackney

Shortlist revealed

The 2014 awards received a record-breaking number of nominations, ranging from schools to private homes, large housing developments to shop space. Some tough decisions by the judging panel resulted in a shortlist of 16.

During September the panel will visit each of the shortlisted schemes to determine the winners, commendations and mentions. The winners will be revealed at the awards ceremony on 26 November. 

Please take a look at each of the shortlisted schemes below.

People's Choice Award - vote for your favourite building or space

The people of Hackney and visitors to the borough are invited to vote for their favourite building or space to win the People's Choice Award.

Scheme 1 - Black and White Building, EC2A

The comprehensive refurbishment of an historic former furniture factory for flexible workspace in Shoreditch. View scheme and vote

BlackboxScheme 2 - Blackbox, N1

A new build modern interpretation of a mews house on a small infill site. View scheme and vote

Scheme  3 - Cardinal Pole Catholic School, E9

A new school building bringing together various campuses into one building arranged around three learning communities. View scheme and vote

Church WalkScheme 4 - 151 Church Walk, N16

An innovative scheme accommodating four units on a small urban site. View scheme and vote

Scheme  5 - 141-145 Curtain Road, EC2A

Refurbishment of existing Victorian buildings with bold and modern upper level additions for office space. View scheme and vote

Scheme  6 - Drake's, N1

Refurbishment of fine interwar building for work space with apartments on the upper floors. View scheme and vote

Scheme 7 - The Garden School, N16

This is a new replacement school building with play spaces on a tight urban site. View scheme and vote

Scheme 8 - The Gingerbread House, E9

A new build timber one bed house on the site of former box factory using mix of materials and cedar shingles. View scheme and vote

Greenwood RoadScheme 9 - Greenwood Road, E8

This project involves the conversion, repair and extensive remodelling of a semi-detached family Victorian house. View scheme and vote 

Scheme 10 - Hackney City Farm Shop, E2

A new shop space using recycled and reclaimed building materials in a innovative and playful way. View scheme and vote

Scheme 11 - Kings Crescent Estate Pocket Park, N4

A community based initiative to create a small space and orchard on left over land at Kings Crescent Estate. View scheme and vote

215 Kingsland RoadScheme 12 - 215 Kingsland Road, E2

A small residential /studio infill site using corten steel cladding set between two Grade II listed buildings. View scheme and vote

Scheme 13 - Leonard Circus Shared Space, EC2A

A new urban space applying concepts of shared space with pedestrian priority to this major intersection in Shoreditch. View scheme and vote

Scheme 14 - Shakespeare House, E9

Extensive remodelling, extension and re-cladding of an existing apartment block to create a modern accommodation and a contemporary exterior. View scheme and vote

Scheme 15 - Waddington Studios, N16

The development comprises artist studios and residences within a mews street in Stoke Newington. View scheme and vote 

Scheme  16 - Writer's Shed, E8

A simple small timber shed at the bottom of a garden conceived as a writer's retreat. View scheme and vote

People's Choice Award

The people of Hackney and visitors to the borough are invited to vote for their favourite building or space from an inspirational shortlist. The entry that receives the most votes will be announced as the People's Choice at the Hackney Design Awards 2014 ceremony on 26 November. Voting closes 20 October 2014.

We requested entries to consider the following aspects:

  • Quality - it is of the highest quality in terms of its design, materials used or construction, and is an exemplar for its end use
  • Visual amenity - makes a positive visual contribution to its location
  • Innovation - is an original response to design, construction or environmental constraints, or uses pioneering building techniques
  • Sustainability - incorporates design, construction, infrastructure, management, landscape, natural or other mechanisms/processes
