Electric vehicles
Hackney Council is committed to helping people travel in a more sustainable way and is working to reduce transport-related emissions across the borough.
Read about our commitment to electric vehicles.
The benefits of electric vehicles include:
- a reduction in emissions compared with conventional internal combustion engined vehicles
- Electric vehicle (EV) technology addresses concerns relating to energy security and dependency on imported oil
- Transport is responsible for 22% of CO2 emissions in London of which road transport modes comprise 81% of this total. If electric vehicles are powered by renewably sourced/green tariff electricity then electric vehicles will help combat climate change
- Electric vehicles are significantly quieter for city driving as there is minimal engine and transmission noise. This is particular the case where they replace stop-starting diesels and at night when ambient noise levels are lower
Electric vehicle charging points in Hackney
- Bentley Road public car park in Dalston
- Homerton Hospital car park
- Britannia Leisure Centre car park in Hoxton

A further five are proposed for the 2011/12 financial year in the following locations:
- Clissold Road, N16
- Pitfield Street, N1
- Lavender Grove, E8
- Garnham Street, N16
- Worship Street, EC2
Additional charging points are also being considered for 2012/13 and 2013/14 (locations yet to be identified).

The Pan London Membership Scheme - Source London
Hackney does not require EV drivers to register with the Council directly to use the EV charging bays. Instead, anyone who is a member of the Source London scheme and holds a valid access tag and cable can use our charging points in accordance with the local parking controls.
Initially members are being charged a flat fee membership which is expected to eventually move to Pay-As-You-Go when membership reaches justifiable numbers.
Any vehicle that is licensed with the DVLA as a pure electric or a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle can join the scheme. This includes motorbikes, cars, vans, trucks and scooters.
Become a member
To become a member and join the Source London scheme visit the Source London scheme website to register (an annual membership fee is payable).
Parking charges
Currently standard parking fees are applicable for the two charging points in Council controlled public car parks (Bentley Road and Britannia Leisure Centre).
Due to practical reasons and to encourage uptake of electric vehicles for the time being there will be no parking charges applied where a new EV bay involves the conversion of single and double yellow lines or resident's parking bays. If the EV charging bay results in the loss of an existing Pay & Display bay then parking charges will be applied.
The long-term aim of the Council will be to charge for parking in all EV charging point bays during CPZ hours in order to discourage local car journeys and to encourage turnover of bays.
Parking controls and time restrictions
All EV charging bays will be 'EV recharging only at all times' (24 hours a day, 365 days a year) and where parking charges are in place then controlled parking hours will apply. Maximum stay is currently 4 hours with no return within 2 hours however this is subject to change dependent upon location of the bay.
Resident's parking permit discount
Residents and businesses in Hackney that have electric vehicles are eligible for free parking permits in CPZ areas (proof of this will be required in order to receive this concession). Visit the parking permit fees and conditions page for further information.
