
Hackney Design Awards 2004
Hackney's first Design Awards resulted in:
- 6 winners in the Main Awards catogory
- 4 highly commended photographs winning the Photography Competition
- A film made by documentary film-makers and students providing a visual statement of Hackney's built environment
Photography Competition
This competition was open to anyone over the age of 10, amateur or professional, and was designed to encourage people to look at the environment they live in and photograph it. These could be abstract views, real people, interactions with local spaces or buildings or landscapes. There were 65 entries by 31 different photographers were received, including a local primary school and an older peoples group. Four photgraphs were highly commended. These were:

- View Of Hackney Empire/Central Libray/Town Hall: By John Pritchard
- Girl running on Mare Street: By Chris Collier
Youth Film Project
A 10 minute film made by documentary film-makers provides a visual statement of Hackney's built environment as seen by young people in Hackney and architects. Limited copies of the DVD are available and can be provided on request. A screening of the film can be arranged for groups in Hackney.
Main Awards - The Winning Schemes
An awards ceremony to announce the winners was held at the Hackney Empire on Tuesday 7th December 2004. Awards were presented by Sir Richard Rogers and Victoria Thornton (Director, Open House), and Mayor Jules Pipe. The Mayor’s opening speech described how this scheme plays an important part in Hackney’s Community Strategy to grow and develop into a thriving and balanced community. It is a key example of how we are building on the strengths of our communities to make Hackney a great place for people to live and work.
