Unitary Development Plan (UDP)

PDF File UDP Saved Policy Direction and Fall Back Document (issued by Hackney Planning Policy Team)

The Unitary Development Plan (UDP) sets out the council’s planning policies, and provides the basis for the Council’s decisions on planning applications.  The Hackney Unitary Development Plan (UDP) was adopted on June 5, 1995 and is the existing Development Plan for the Borough.  This plan provides the statutory framework to guide development and protect and enhance the environment of Hackney over a period of 5 to 10 years.

However, as a result of changes to planning legislation the UDP is now a part of the Hackney Local Development Framework (LDF).  The Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act (2004) resulted in the current UDP becoming a ‘saved document’ under the Hackney LDF for the next three years (i.e. until September 2007).  During this interval the UDP will continue to apply to the Borough but over time it will be replaced by new LDF documents being produced by the Hackney Planning Policy team

At the completion of the three year period mentioned above, it is intended that sufficient documents will have been produced under the LDF system that no parts of the current UDP will need to remain ‘saved’.

The current UDP is divided into two parts:

Part 1 contains broad ‘strategic’ policies, taking account of national and London-wide guidance.

Part 2 contains the justification for these policies together with more detailed policies, planning standards and proposals where there is likely to be development during the plan period.

There is also a proposals map which shows areas where specific policies and proposals apply.

A copy of the UDP costs £35 individually (excluding postage) and the Proposals Map costs £15 (£16 including postage) individually.  The UDP and Proposals Map can be purchased together for £39 (including postage).
