Bishopsgate Goods Yard Supplementary Planning Document
The Council, along with London Borough of Tower Hamlets and the Greater London Authority, is currently developing a draft masterplan for Bishopsgate Goods Yard in Shoreditch.
What is a masterplan and why are we doing one?
A masterplan is a tool to manage development pressure or to help regeneration. The Council has identified Bishopsgate Goods Yard as an area of regeneration. Developers have assembled this large site which will be an area of significant change. The Council, along with its partners, want to ensure planning guidance is prepared in advance of any development being agreed with the help of extensive community consultation. It is considered that there is a wide range of opportunities to improve the site. It will identify opportunities through:
- improving the environment and streetscape;
- identifying what type of new buildings could be built and how these could interact with each other and the surroundings;
- indentifying how people will move about the site including to and from the new station;
- retaining and enhancing buildings and structures that have heritage value;
- creating a better and safer pedestrian environment, creating and/or enhancing open space and linking those open spaces together; and
- identifying priorities, projects and measures that are required to help deliver and support regeneration of the area.
Overall, it will provide a design rationale that will plan for the site as a whole, rather than in a piecemeal manner.
Consultation and Programme
Community consultation is a key element of developing an effective Masterplan. Two initial community drop-in sessions are scheduled for:
- Monday 30th June 2.30pm - 8.30pm,
Venue: St. Hilda’s East Community Centre,18 Club Row, London E2 7EY - Tuesday 1st July 2.30pm - 8.30pm
Venue: Shoreditch Town Hall, 380 Old Street, London EC1V 9LT
Members of the public are invited to express their views on what type of development they would like to see on the site. The views we collect at the informal consultation events and those sent in in the subsequent weeks will have the help inform the draft masterplan document.
The information boards will be displayed on the day and a consultation questionnaire available for people to provide feedback. These are also available to download here. If you are unable to attend on the consultation days, you will still be able to provide us with comments. Please call 020 8356 8196 if you have any questions about the consultation.
You will have a further chance to comment on a draft masterplan when the Council undertakes the formal consultation stage scheduled for late 2008 which will present for consultation a range of ideas as to how the site could best be regenerated.
The masterplan is scheduled for adoption as a supplementary planning document (SPD) early 2009.
