The Tower of Church of Saint Augustine

Saint Augustine's Tower

TOWER OF CHURCH OF SAINT AUGUSTINE
Built by the end of the 13th century
Dedicated to St. John after 1660
Church demolished 1797-98
(Mare Street, by Clock Tower)

Saint Augustine’s Clock Tower, Mare Street is the only remains of the medieval parish church of Hackney. After the church was demolished in 1798 and the Rowe Chapel, built in 1614 which survived until 1896 the tower remained as an important feature of Hackneys history. Built in the 13th century the church and tower were then dedicated to St John after 1660 once Sir John Heron, Lord of the Manor and the rector Christpher Urswyck had restored it.

The tower is a significant part of Hackney’s past and stands alone as the only medieval structure in the Borough.
