Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender

Hackney Council is committed to securing equality for people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) and valuing the contribution made by LGBT citizens.

LGBT people have equal rights to quality of life as other citizens, yet LGBT people as a group are at disproportionately at higher risk of disadvantage, marginalisation, abuse and violence, all of which have a negative impact on their life chances.

The Council will work towards secure better outcomes for LGBT people in Hackney in terms of the 10 dimensions of equality, our Sustainable Community Strategy and key plans.

To achieve this, we will work in partnership with Team Hackney and with businesses and residents towards improved life outcomes for LGBT people who visit, work or live in Hackney.

Hackney Council is committed to eradicating homophobic and transphobic abuse and violence and unfair negative discrimination on the grounds of a person's actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity.

We are committed to promoting a diverse and cohesive Hackney characterised by mutual respect and understanding, where residents are equipped with a good understanding of LGBT issues and accord equal value, dignity and respect to people who are LGBT. A Hackney where LGBT people are enabled to achieve their full potential.

Workplace Equality

Stonewall Diversity Champion

Stonewall logoAs part of our work to promote rights for people who are lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) we are proud to be part of Stonewall's Diversity Champion Programme. The programme aims to promote the rights of LGB people in the workplace and service provision. See Stonewall's Workplace web page.

Stonewall Top 100 logoStonewall's Workplace Equality Index is an annual benchmarking tool used by over 350 organisations and showcases Britain's top employers for LGB staff. Whilst the Index focuses on workplace practices, it also examines the contribution organisations make in promoting LGB equality in the community. In January 2011, Hackney Council was ranked 23rd in the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index 2011, making us the top 3rd London Borough and the top 5th council nationwide.  We increased our position by 20 places from last year.

Transgender rights in the workplace

Hackney Council is working with Out and About, our staff LGBT forum, to explore benchmarking our practice on workplace equality for people who are transgender.
