Access requests or kerb dropping

The council provides a quotation and construction service if you need to drop the kerb outside your property to make a driveway. Permission is required from the council in order for you to construct this. If the property is rented the Landlord's or owner's permission to take a vehicle into the garden will also be required.

Are there any restrictions for a dropped kerb construction?

Yes, there are restrictions on a classified highway (A or B roads). Planning permission is usually required for which there is a further charge.

What can I do if permission is refused?

If your application is refused you will receive a letter stating the reason why it has been refused and you have a right of appeal to Secretary of State, Planning Inspectorate, Tollgate House, Houlton Street, Bristol, BS2 9DR.

How do I request the estimate?

Application can be made by completing the on-line Request for Dropped Kerb Application Form or by telephoning us on 020 8356 2897.

A Highways officer will visit your property to take measurements. Within 10 days they will send you a written quotation detailing the total cost and details of methods of payment. You can request the method of receiving information on the application form, i.e. via email or post, etc.

How much will the estimate cost?

The cost depends on the size of the footpath and how wide the crossing will be. A single access through an average 6 Foot (1.8 metre) wide footpath would currently cost approximately £385.00.

How do I arrange for the construction service?

Before you arrange the construction service you must first complete the on-line request for estimate form. If you have already received an estimate that you wish to accept and pay on-line, you can do so here.

What work is involved for the cost?

The kerbs will be replaced with usually 3 low units and a splay kerb at each side. Generally the surface will be rebuilt in tarmac for the full width of the footpath. Only where all other crossings in the street are in concrete flag will the flags be reused on a new foundation. The work is normally in two stages. One day for kerbs, foundation and the first tarmac layer, followed some days later by the final tarmac layer.
