Frequently Asked Questions
Street Furniture
Street furniture falls into two broad categories classified as lit and unlit. Lit furniture encompasses all road signs and bollards on islands. Unlit encompasses items such as barrier gates, guardrails, litterbins, and unlit signs.
Lit items:
- Belisha Beacons,
- Traffic Signs (not parking signs),
- Traffic bollards on traffic islands.
Unlit items:
- Benches (but not in parks or on estates),
- Barrier gates (Public Highway Only),
- Guard Rails,
- Tree Grids (Ironwork) (Tree pits to be referred to the Highways Inspectorate),
- Bollards (referred to the Highways Inspectorate),
- Street name plates.
I would like to report a missing or damaged item?
A lit item is not working.
If the item is on a red route or part of an estate it is not the responsibility of London Borough of Hackney (Streetscene). Red routes are managed by Transport for London and estates by the Housing association or the estate manager.
For any other roads please call the Hackney Service Centre on 020 8356 2897 with as much detail as possible about the Item. Please include the location, details of the exact issue and your contact details so we can notify you with an update on the situation.
A site visit will be organised and assessment of the problem undertaken.
Can I please request a new street nameplate?
Before we can place a new street nameplate the request has to be justified. Please contact the Hackney Service Centre on 020 8356 2897 with the name of the street/road for which a plate is required. We will need to check if it’s an un-adopted road or one on the public highway. If the road is un-adopted it is the responsibility of the residents who must discuss this with the management body.
For all other roads, please contact the Hackney Service Centre on 020 8356 2897. Please provide details including the problem of the street plate and any visibility issues.
A site visit will be organised and you will be notified of the outcome.
The barrier gates have been left open?
Please call the Hackney Service Centre on 020 8356 2897 with as much detail as possible about the barrier gates, such as the location and your contact details.
Your enquiry will be logged and you will be contacted and advised on what will be done.
