Frequently Asked Questions
Traffic Management Schemes
How can I request the Council to introduce a traffic management scheme?
Traffic Management Schemes are introduced to resolve a wide range of different issues relating to the movement of traffic on the highway. Submitted requests can be emailed to the Hackney Service Centre on info@hackney.gov.uk or can be posted to the address below.
Requests are prioritised based on what is found on the site and the severity of the problems investigated.
Speeding traffic – If this compromises safety or results in a high level of traffic accidents, depending on the circumstances, we may consider measures. These include traffic calming, road humps, safety cameras and other measures.
Through Traffic – If this compromises safety or results in a high level of traffic accidents similar measures to those above can be considered. If the impact of traffic is more environmental or affects the quality of life of residents in a lower status road a road closure may be considered.
Goods Vehicle traffic – Heavy goods vehicle traffic should use the main road network wherever possible to travel to destinations. Minor roads should only be used when close to arriving to the required destination. Heavy goods vehicle traffic should not be finding a convenient short cut to avoid congestion and reduce delay. If HGV’s are passing through minor roads and cause a detrimental environmental impact on local residents then a local area weight limit restriction or width restriction may be considered.
Parking problems – There are many types of parking problems these include:
- Obstruction of accesses,
- Roads and junctions,
- Insufficient parking places being available for residents and businesses.
The available solutions for consideration include:
- Controlled parking zones (parking places / permits) to manage on-street parking demand more efficiently.
- Providing waiting and loading restrictions (yellow lines / yellow strikes) to restrict parking.
Cycling facilities – If cycling on the roads is difficult or dangerous there are a range of different measures that can improve access and safety for cyclists and promote cycling as an alternative transport mode. These include:
- Designated cycle routes,
- Cycle slips at gated closures,
- Secure cycle parking,
- Cycle tracks and lanes.
Bus Service Performance – Existing service problems you may have with bus service provision may include frequency of service, over crowding and hold ups. To submit your enquiry please email the Hackney Service Centre at info@hackney.gov.uk or write to the address listed below. We will liaise with Transport for London.
