Trading Standards
Hackney Trading Standards makes sure that there is a fair and safe trading environment in the borough and that fair competition prevails. We enforce legislation and undertake activities that safeguard the economic health and well being of residents within the borough.
Who we are
We are a team of 8 officers consisting of Trading Standards officers (Inspectors of Weights and Measures) and Commercial Standards Officers.
What we do
- Receive complaints about purchases and trading practices from consumers
- Give first step advice to consumers
- Investigate complaints and other situations (found as a result of inspection or sampling) where it is alleged that there is a failure to comply with the law
- Carry inspection of businesses
- Carry out test purchases of various items in the borough
- Receive enquires from new and existing businesses based in the borough about how to comply with trading standards
- Advise businesses of how to comply with legislation either during inspections of businesses, replying to enquires made by businesses, or by doing talks
- Undertake in-depth projects on areas where there is a need or a concern about particular trading practices
Receiving complaints and enquires
Our Divisional administration team take calls from the between the hours of 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday.
When we receive your query we will telephone you by the end of 3 working days (the 3 working day starts from the day it was received). The same applies to letters e-mails and faxes.
If you have given us a number on which we cannot contact you during the day or we have not been successful in contacting you by phone we will send you a basic letter of advice based on the information we have received from our administration team. The letter may not be with you until the fifth day after your complaint was received.
