Recycling in Hackney

Why recycle?

Recycling is quick and easy. It’s about making a simple choice between putting items in your bin or recycling them. You will find your rubbish takes up less space as you recycle more, and you’ll be doing something good for your community as well. Hackney Council offers a comprehensive recycling service to residents. The links on the left of this page provide detailed information about all aspects of recycling and waste prevention in Hackney

Recycling rate

The recycling rate in Hackney in November 2007 was 24%. This means that 24% of all waste collected in Hackney was recycled. You can help to increase the recycling rate by increasing the amount you recycle, and decreasing the amount of waste you produce.  Up to 60% of rubbish that ends up in an average household bin can be recycled.

Street level properties

All street level properties have a weekly Green Box (dry recyclables) and Blue Bin (food waste) collection. 16,000 street level properties have access to the Brown Bin service (garden waste).

Estates and high rise properties

All estate and high rise properties can recycle green, brown and clear glass, as well as tins, cans and paper. Hackney Council is still working towards finding the best method for recycling on estates, and there are currently several trials underway, which include the recycling of food waste, plastic bottles and cardboard.

Waste prevention

Waste prevention plays a large part in Hackney Council’s recycling programme. Check out the waste prevention page (link on the left of this page) to find out how you can reduce and reuse, as well as recycle.
