Council Tax Bands
The District Valuer of the Valuation Office Agency is responsible for assessing property values for Council Tax purposes. Each domestic property must be allocated an appropriate valuation band according to its market value as at 1 April 1991.
There are eight valuation bands and your property will be in one of these bands. Your Council Tax band will determine how much Council Tax you will have to pay each year. The valuation bands for 2012/13 are:

Banding Appeals
There has been some recent publicity about Council Tax payers requesting a re-banding where they believe their property has been valued incorrectly. Please note that any appeals should be made direct to the Valuation Office Agency.
The council is not involved in the valuation of property and is legally obliged to charge and enforce collection based on the Council Tax band shown in the current Valuation List. The Valuation Office Agency is an executive agency of HM Revenues & Customs and therefore does not fall under the jurisdiction of the council.
Please note that Council Tax legislation states that unless your property has been altered, any appeal against the banding of a property may only be made within six months of the Council Tax payer becoming liable. You should also be aware that following an appeal, it is possible that your property's banding may go up rather than down.
You should not appeal to us
You can contact the Valuation Office Agency direct on 03000 504 650, more information on valuation and appeals is available on their website www.voa.gov.uk
Please note that you must pay the Council Tax based on the present valuation band of your property until the Listing Officer changes the list. We cannot waive payment until your appeal is settled. But we can refund any overpayment afterwards if your appeal succeeds.
