Disabled Band Reduction
If you or someone who lives with you need a room, an extra bathroom or kitchen, or extra space in your property to meet special need arising from a disability, you may be qualify for a reduction in your Council Tax bill.
The council will need to be satisfied that a disabled person lives in the property and needs either
- Space for a wheelchair to be used inside the home, or
- An additional kitchen, or
- An additional bathroom or
- A room, which is essential or of importance to the disabled person's well being such as a kidney dialysis machine.
If you already get such a reduction, your bill will say `Disabled Band’. If you believe that you may be entitled to receive Disabled Band Reduction contact the Council Tax section on 020 8356 3154 or download the form.
Only the person who is liable to pay the Council Tax can apply for the reduction, and the disabled person must be living in the property. If you can provide some supporting documentation which confirms that the wheelchair space or room is needed by the disabled person this would be helpful.
If you qualify for the reduction, your Council Tax will be charged at the valuation band immediately below that shown in the Valuation List. You should note that the Valuation Band of the property will not be changed just the charging basis. This reduction is also available to people living in a property which falls into Band A, the lowest band and in these cases, the Council Tax will be charged on a percentage of the Band A value.
Due to the nature of the reduction, an inspection of the property will be required.
