How your bill is worked out

The amount of Council Tax we set each year is based on the difference between how much we need to spend to provide services and how much income we receive from Central Government, other grants, fees and charges.

For 2011/12 the amount of Council Tax to be raised is £66.658m which, when divided by the number of Band D equivalent properties, results in a Hackney Council Tax of £998.45 per Band D property.

This is added to the Council Tax required by the Greater London Authority (GLA). Hackney Council is legally required to collect this tax on their behalf. The GLA set its Band D tax for 2011/12 at £308.92 When this is added to the Hackney Council element of tax, it results in an overall Band D Council Tax of £1,308.27 for 2011/12.

Your Council Tax will depend on what the valuation band your home is in. This is based on how much it was worth on 1 April 1991. This valuation was carried out independently by the Listing Officer of the Inland Revenue. The proportion of tax payable in each property band is determined by the Government.
