How do I join my local library?
You can join all the libraries in Hackney by visiting any one of our libraries, completing an online form or calling Hackney Service Centre on 020 8356 3000.

What do I get with my library membership?
You can borrow from a range of books, DVDs, CDs and spoken word tapes. Items are also available in large print and in a range of community languages. In the library you can study, use a computer and take computer training. You can also make use of our library halls.
How much does library membership cost?
It's free to join Hackney Libraries and take out books. We do however have to charge £2 for DVDs, 80p for CDs and £1 for videos that we've had in stock for less than a year.
Are there different types of membership?
We offer full or introductory membership.
For introductory membership, you don't need to provide proof of name or address, but you can only borrow two books at a time.
For full membership you need to provide proof of name and address. You can borrow up to 12 items together with unlimited access to all the facilities in our libraries.
What proof of address do you accept?
You'll need to show the librarian an orginal document with your name and address on such as -
- recent utility bill (less than 3 months old)
- recent bank statement (less than 3 months old)
- driving licence
- medical card
- TV licence
- letter from Inland Revenue
If you're 17 or under you will need to supply proof of name and address of your parent or guardian, who must be over 18.
Do I need to let the library know if I change my name and/or address?
Yes, it's important to let us know if you change your name and/or address so we can keep our records up to date. You may visit any library to provide this information. For proof of address requirements please see previous question.
What happens if I lose my library card?
You'll have to pay a fee for a replacement card. This is needed to cover administration costs. You can get a replacement card from any of our libraries.

Can I continue to use the libraries in Hackney if I move out of the borough?
Yes, all the libraries in Hackney are open to everyone, whether you live in the borough or not.
How do I cancel my library membership?
You'll have to return your library membership card. You can hand it in at any library in Hackney, together with any items you have out on loan and by paying all outstanding charges.

How can I book a computer in the library?
Any member, introductory or full, can use a computer in any of our libraries. You can make an advance booking using our online form or by calling Hackney Service Centre on 020 8356 3000. Alternatively you can go to the library and book a computer there.
How long can I use the computer for?
Each session is for a maximum of one hour which is the daily maximum allowance. We have to limit use so that as many people as possible can use these facilities. You can book several shorter sessions in one or more libraries that add up to an hour on any one day.
Can a friend or relative book a computer for me using my membership details?
No, you need to book a session yourself as you have to provide your membership card details and PIN.
What do the computer tutorials on offer in the library cover?
We offer free training in basic computer use, including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, creating and using an email account and using the internet.
How long are the tutorials and how many will I need to take to cover the basics?
Each tutorial can last up to an hour and will cover the basics of the subject it is on.
How can I book a computer tutorial?
Call Hackney Service Centre on 020 8356 3000 or visit the library where you'd like to have the tutorial.
How can I renew books or other items that I borrowed if I need them for a longer period?
You can renew items by using our online renew form, by calling Hackney Service Centre on 020 8356 3000 or by going into any library in Hackney.
What happens if I don't return or renew books and other items on time?
If you don't return or renew items you have on loan, you'll have to pay a fine - how much will depend on how far over the return date you go before you renew or return them. We may send you a letter to remind you if you miss the renew/return date.
Can I renew books or other items if I already have a fine to pay?
We don't usually let you renew items if you have an outstanding fine or charge unless you've agreed a payment plan with us. However, we're willing to look at all individual circumstances and come to some agreement. You'll need to discuss your situation with the librarian.
What should I do if an item is lost or stolen from me?
You'll need to let the library know straightaway by calling Hackney Service Centre on 020 8356 3000 or by visiting your library.
Will I have to pay for any lost or stolen items?
Yes, you are liable to pay for anything you lose or is stolen when it is out on loan on your library card. This cost is so we can replace the item, if you find the item and bring it back to the library we will give you a refund.
What happens if an item is lost or stolen when a friend or relative has borrowed it on my card?
You are still liable - your library membership card is for your use only, you should never let anyone else use it.
Do any of the libraries in Hackney have halls for hire?
Stoke Newington, CLR James, Stamford Hill and Homerton libraries all have halls to hire. Stoke Newington also has a gallery available for arts events. Visit Hackney Libraries Halls for more information.
