Geographical Information Systems (GIS)

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are tools for the analysis and understanding of information in such a way as to take into account location based knowledge.

One of the ways that geographic information may be ultimately presented is in the form of printed maps and this is the aspect of GIS that most people would be most familiar with. Increasingly, however, customers and the communtiy look for access to geographic information in a flexible and live fashion. Paper maps represent a frozen snap-shot of the earth's surface at a given point in time. With the new technologies we have the opportunity to deliver a service that gives the customer access to knowledge about the borough using the most up to date information available, in which the customer can ask questions suitable for his or her purpose and display the results in a web browser based map display.
