Sharing the Corporate Gazetteer using the Hub and Satellite system

Having a definitive address database of all land and property within the borough is only useful if this data can be shared in a cost effective and seamless way. Not only that, the property gazetteer must also be accessible to a wide variety of applications.

To this end the Corporate Gazetteer has been developed with an Open approach. The core technologies it uses to achieve this approach are:

  • SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) as the query interface to the gazetteer
  • XML (Extensible Mark Up Language) as the data exchange format
  • XSL (Extensible Stylesheet Language) for the transformation of XML to relational databases
  • GML (Geographic Mark Up Language) for the exchange of geographic data
  • HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol) the World Wide Web protocol

What this means is that the Corporate Gazetteer sits as a centralised hub of land and property addresses which can be queried through the web (as a web service) and used to keep client databases synchronised with this central hub. Whenever the corporate gazetteer is updated, the client databases are updated.

Typically the only changes that need to be made on the client database side is the implementation of an application to receive the address update information from the hub (via xml packets) and transform them into SQL update statements on the local database. With many systems, these applications have already been developed.

Process for a system to become connected to the Corporate Gazetteer

  1. Synchronise the existing addresses within the client database with those in the Corporate Gazetteer
  2. Installation of satellite application
  3. Connection to Hub
