Past Engagements July 2008

The Speaker attended a variety of events in July, including:

St John at Hackney Church Fete and Rededication of the Churchyard

5 July. The Speaker was pleased to be involved in the re-birth of the lovely gardens restored by a partnership project between the Council, Heritage Lottery Fund, Groundwork East and the church.

Balfour Beatty London Youth Games 2008

The Speaker visited Crystal Palace National Sports Centre on 5 July to view the sports competitions taking place throughout the weekend, where young people representing the 32 London Boroughs and Corporation of London were striving to achieve their best.

Hackney Youth Awards

The Speaker attended Hackney Youth Awards on 10 July. The award ceremony celebrates the achievement of young people in Hackney who attend youth provisions throughout the borough. It was the ninth annual award ceremony and this year a new category was instituted – ‘Highly Commended’ – due to the high level of nominee achievement.

Tech Firm Donates £500 to Speaker’s Charities

On 16 July 2008, technology firm Gandlake made a donation to the Speaker of Hackney’s nominated charities for 2008; Laburnum Boat Club, Hackney Society and King’s Centre Family Project – Strengthening Families, Strengthening Communities.

The donation marks the 5,000th registration to view Council Tax information through a password-protected account available via Hackney Council’s website – a service provided by Gandlake.

Gandlake is donating 10 pence per registration.

Cllr Ian Rathbone, Speaker of Hackney, was delighted to accept this donation for his chosen charities for the year.

Great City Run

Twenty-seven people, including Mayor Jules Pipe, took part in the five-kilometre Great City Run on 17 July, joining thousands of City workers to raise money for charity.

Laburnum Boat Club, one of the chosen charities of the Speaker of Hackney, Cllr Ian Rathbone, is set to benefit from the £2,236 raised.

Children’s S.C.R.A.P. Project 30th Anniversary Celebration

The Speaker was invited to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Children’s S.C.R.A.P. project on 25 July. He congratulated the project for reusing and recycling industrial waste in education and play over three decades.
