Hackney Gets Set for the 2012 Games

Thousands of Hackney residents grabbed the chance to find out how they can get involved now and benefit from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Around 3,000 local people flocked to Get Set Hackney on Thursday 13 March where over 1,000 people signed up for new job opportunities and 240 said they were interested in volunteering for the Games.

Special guests at Get Set Hackney included Olympic athlete Jonathan Edwards and Hackney’s Paralympic swimmer, Dervis Konuralp.

A big part of the day long event was making local people aware of the job opportunities the Games are bringing and registering them to be among the first to hear about these.

Get Set Hackney included the Council’s annual training and employment fair ‘Opportunities Now’ where local people signed-up for 2012 job opportunities.

London 2012’s Get Set London road show included interactive sports equipment and information on jobs, skills and business. The Olympic Delivery Authority provided updates on building the Games and jobs on the site.

All day the Town Hall square was abuzz with sports, music, dance and acrobatics including a display from the Hackney Sparrows basketball team, taekwondo, African dance and drumming and a Jazz band.

Kim Wright, the Council’s Corporate Director, Community Services, said; ”Get Set Hackney was a great day which saw many Hackney people come along to the Town Hall and Ocean to find out more about how they can get involved with the 2012 Games. The sports, music and acrobatics displays were great fun. But the real point of the day was to let people know that the Games mean jobs, training and volunteering opportunities and these are available to them now.”
