What happens to compost, and how it benefits the community
In 2008/09 over 105 tonnes of compost created from food waste was used in parks, green spaces, schools and allotments across the borough helping to make Hackney a greener place to live.
All food waste collected in Hackney through your blue bin is delivered to a composting facility operated by London Waste Ltd where it is broken down into compost. This compost is then made available to Hackney to use on its parks and green spaces. View a Flash animation of how the process works.
An award winning team
Hackney Council's recycling team has picked up a national industry award for the community composting schemes in the borough.
The recent Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee (LARAC) Awards saw the team pick up the award for Best Waste Minimisation/Prevention Project. The award is a recognition of hard work in the past 12 months developing composting initiatives and setting up small-scale projects on estates across Hackney.
The team has also been shortlisted for this year's National Recycling Awards in the The Waste Minimisation Awards category. These annual awards continue to reward and support the efforts of local authorities and councils, as well as construction and retail sectors. The waste management community is fully recognised, rewarded and represented at the National Recycling Awards.
